Lea County Sheriff Dies After Shooting Self

Hobbs Police and State Police responded to a 911 call from Coffman's home in the 5200 block of Baggett Street in Hobbs around 11:30 p.m.

LOVINGTON - Officials with the New Mexico Department of Public Safety say Lea County Sheriff Rod Coffman shot and killed himself Sunday night.

Hobbs Police and State Police responded to a 911 call from Coffman's home in the 5200 block of Baggett Street in Hobbs around 11:30 p.m.

Officers found Coffman deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. State Police say it is unknown at this time why Coffman may have committed suicide. The case is under investigation.
