MIDLAND- A Midland woman with family in the town of West is thankful that her loved ones are safe. But she did share information with NewsWest 9 about one couple in the area who had a very close call.

Melinda Henderson has been keeping in contact with her relatives and friends all day long and that couple was actually one of her family members who lost their home and were very close to losing a volunteer firefighter.

"The wife was standing outside with her kids at the time the explosion happened and all of her windows of her house shattered and their roof collapsed. Which means they were very lucky if they've been inside, they would have been just covered in glass," Henderson, said.

Henderson is from Waco and what she is describing is the same story that many went through Wednesday night after the explosion happened in the town of West. The husband of one of her family members is a volunteer firefighter who responded to the fire at the plant moments after it was reported. She says he is still alive today because he happened to step away for a bit just before the plant exploded.

"So lucky he is alive and he is well. But he had lost several friends that were firefighters with him that was in the explosion. He actually went by this morning, he's been working all night, he went by this (Thursday) morning so he can see his kids and let them know he's ok, looks terrible, obviously and of course now all of this is over, he has no home to go to," Henderson said.

According to Henderson, one of her cousins house was damaged pretty bad too. Her family is helping out those who need it in every way they can.

"There's a lot of people taking care of them and they're going to be ok, because they're alive. The little kids are scared, we're just thankful they made it out ok," Henderson said.
