40th Celebration of the Arts festival comes back to Midland

Arts Council of Midland hosted their 40th Celebration of the Arts event at the Bush Convention Center.

MIDLAND, Texas —

On Saturday, the Arts Council of Midland hosted their 40th Celebration of the Arts festival at the Bush Convention Center.

When someone usually thinks of an oil and gas city, most might not expect it to have much of an arts scene.

However, the Arts Council of Midland said everywhere someone goes there is some appreciation for the arts.

“I think people still always need something that's enriching to their lives, culturally enriching, and that's what art does for us. Otherwise, everybody may not like an abstract painting or a photograph, but we all have things that we put on our walls, and we sit on our tables and arrange them ourselves and you're composing when you do that,” said Danny Holleva, executive director of the Arts Council of Midland.

Holleva said art plays an important role besides looking nice and being admired.

“Well, I think the arts teaches about our history about culture, they are very important in education because it allows students that may not be prolific in one area of education," Holleva said. "They can definitely have that feeling of confidence working in the arts.”

Holleva also mentioned that the fact that they’ve been able to keep this going for 40 years shows that the Midland community more than supports them.

“They all recognize the need for something that is enriching to people's lives, the creative spark. And so, it means the world it it's what allows us to do what we do,” said Holleva.

The event will still be going on from 12 p.m. to 5 pm. on Sunday, July 14.
