Yet another earthquake hits West Texas Saturday

SCURRY COUNTY, Texas — UPDATE (5 p.m. Saturday): An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 was reported to have taken place about eight miles northeast of Hermleigh. 

ORIGINAL STORY:

Another earthquake hit West Texas Friday morning, causing tremors felt across the area.

The United State Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake at 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale at 9:28 a.m. Friday about 9.2 miles northeast of Hermleigh. Later, the agency said the mainshock of the event was registered at 5.0 on the Richter scale. It was then upgraded to a 5.1 magnitude by the USGS.

Another quake was recorded at 9:40 a.m. at 3.2 magnitude about 9.4 miles northeast of Hermleigh. 

That area is where at least nine other earthquakes have been reported since Monday, July 22. 

Friday morning, Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks declared a disaster in the county saying 61 earthquakes have hit the area in seven days.
