Alpine woman loses $2,500 to scam

The scam came from a fake letter that was made to look like it was from CVS.

ALPINE, Texas — There's a woman who fell victim to a CVS scam in Alpine.

The Alpine Police Department got a call about it during the week of Sept. 9.

The woman received a letter in the mail with a Walgreens and CVS logo in the corner saying it was a "customer service evaluation tool" and that it's a secret survey assignment, promising to improve customer service on a global level.

The letter says there's a check included that represents $3,050 to cover bills, evaluation costs and a survey service commission payment of $500.

The letter asks to text a phone number with the amount you received, your bank information and the time it took to complete.

It claims that if you complete the survey in 48 hours, you earn $150 bonus.

The woman followed the directions and bought five $500 gift cards and communicated over text message.

Once she tried to deposit the check that came with the letter to her bank, they told her the check was a fraud and that she was scammed over $2,500.

Alpine PD wants to remind everyone that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If anyone asks to be paid in gift cards or bitcoin it's probably a scam. If anyone spots a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission.
