MIDLAND, Texas — The City of Midland is moving forward with an effort to keep garbage contained at its nearly 400-acre landfill.
On Tuesday, the city approved a contract with the company Wind and Sun Protection, Inc. for the installation of "Litter Net Fencing." The project is set to cost nearly $128,000 and will come out of funds that are available in the Solid Waste Fund budget.
According to Deputy City Manager Morris Williams Jr., trash that may have been blown out mostly impacted the surrounding areas of the landfill, which includes ranchlands and sites off Highway 158.
"There's already an existing net but as we expand the landfill and it grows, then you want to make sure that where you're dumping trash, you're going to have litter fencing and netting and that just keeps the surrounding areas of the landfill clean," said Williams.
Williams said the litter fencing is about 20 to 40 feet tall and it works by catching the litter that the wind scatters. After the winds calm down, it allows staff members to dispose of the trash properly. He expects the fencing to be installed very soon.
"We're regulated to keep the area clean and ensure that we don't have litter out there," Williams said. "So we take great steps we pick up a lot of trash. So the less that we get blown out of our landfill the better off we are and for less resources we have to use to pick up the trash."
