MIDLAND, Texas — The Grand Companions adoption shelter partners with the Sibley Nature Center on the first Thursday of each month for Hike with a Homeless Pet.
Participants and volunteers are able to enjoy the one-mile trail while interacting with the dogs and meeting new people.
“The idea is to enrich their day,” said Leslie McElroy, Grand Companions' communications outreach coordinator. “They get a fun field trip and learn skills that help them find homes.”
The event is designed to educate the public all while each animal has a chance to learn socialization skills.
“Animals teach us to be better people,” said Misty Thomason, the education director for Sibley Nature Center. “This is a great way for the community to discover our trails and our organization.”
For those unable to attend the hike, Grand Companions also offers a “Day PET” program, where volunteers can take a dog out for a day, whether it’s to a coffee shop, a local brewery or just a walk around town.
