Legacy High School student receives perfect score on ASVAB test

Legacy High senior Jade Almendarez Ramirez got a perfect score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test.

MIDLAND, Texas —

When Legacy High senior Jade Almendarez Ramirez was studying to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test she already had an idea of the kind of score she had to at least get.

“If I get a 30 or 40, that's good because I already passed and then I can do like one exam to do the career I want to do because I want to do like uh nurse, like medicine," Ramirez said. "So, I know I need to like more things to like to have the things I want."

But she didn’t get a 30 or 40, instead she got a 99, the highest possible score someone can get on the ASVAB.

According to the Midland Independent School District (MISD), less than 1% of test takers receive such a score.

Ramirez couldn’t be any happier when she found out what she got.

“So, I start crying, like a little baby. I start crying like all day because like I, I'm like happy for me, I'm proud of me that [I put] all the hours [in to] study and all my lunches and all, like coming early to the school and going late home and all my weekends, like vale la pena, like I do it,” said Ramirez.

She said she plans to go into the Navy and make use of her time there to study medicine.

NewsWest 9 asked her if she had any advice for any other students hoping to get a score like hers on the ASVAB.

“Pray a lot, talk with Jesus a lot, study if you can," Ramirez said. "Like I know sometimes it's boring, like being realistic, it’s boring to be studying all the time... If you really want something you need to like, make it happen. Like study a lot like, if you don't understand like go with a teacher and tell him like you know what, I need help... But if you don't ask for help, you're not going to like make it if you don't understand the things.”
