MIDLAND, Texas — This year's Mex-Tex Family Fiesta marks its 37th annual celebration and on Saturday it was filled with entertainment and cultural festivities for all ages.
Festivities started at 12 p.m. and continued until midnight. The fiesta featured live performances by artists such as AJ Castillo, Ruben Ramos & The Mexican Revolution, the Art Tigerina Band and Grupo Pression.
Besides the musical performances, there was also a menudo and fajita cookoff, a cornhole tournament and the inaugural Niña Hispana of the Permian Basin Pageant. There were also vendors that offered food, arts and crafts and a dedicated children’s area with engaging activities for young visitors.
“It's our way of giving back to our community. We also have had a lot of volunteers come and help us with the event. We started setting up since yesterday and it's nice for us to give, be able to give back to the community. We will have music, this Tejano music, this evening. And so it's just a nice area for the community to come out and unite,” said Carolina Garza, director at the Midland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
The fiesta also introduced Sensory Hours, which allowed children with additional support needs to enjoy the festivities and not feel left out.
“So, one of our Board of Directors took it upon herself to go ahead and build the sensory area," Garza said. "So, we've got a whole area for them to come and feel welcome and it's within their comfort zones.”
Garza also said that it's part of Hispanic culture to give back and be involved with the community while also showing everyone a good time.
