Texas Parks and Wildlife adopts state's first-ever mountain lion protection rules

On May 23, commissioners voted to ban the canned hunting of mountain lions and keeping the live animal in traps for longer than 36 hours.

TEXAS, USA — On May 23, Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) commissioners voted to ban the canned hunting of mountain lions and keeping the live animal in traps for longer than 36 hours. 

As of June 6, there's been 57 confirmed sightings of mountain lions in the Lonestar State, according to the TPWD. Most of these sightings have been along the southwestern parts of Texas. 

According to the Texas Farm Bureau, "Breaking the rules is punishable by a Class C misdemeanor and a fine up to $500."

It is the state's first-ever protections for mountain lions.
