Children from AMBER Alert found safe; suspect linked to double homicide

Austin police arrested 31-year-old Sherles Machado-Hernandez.

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: APD revealed new details in this case, which can be found in our latest article.

An AMBER Alert that was issued on Monday afternoon for three children missing from Austin has been canceled and a suspect has been arrested.

Authorities were searching for three young children who have now been located safe, the Austin Police Department said.

The suspect, 31-year-old Sherles Machado-Hernandez, was arrested in the 900 block of Fairfield Drive in North Austin on Monday evening. He was booked into the Travis County Jail.

APD said Machado-Hernandez is also believed to be connected with a double homicide in southeast Austin.

A man and a woman in their 20s were found dead with gunshot wounds in a vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex in southeast Austin around 7:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Burton Drive.

APD said the woman had three children who were unaccounted for, which prompted the AMBER Alert.

APD says it is the 51st and 52nd homicide this year in Austin.

Police are holding a media briefing Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. to give the public more information.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588 or APD Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477.
