MIDLAND, Texas — Many schools and organizations continue to highlight and honor Black History Month and those who have made a big impact on the community.

On Thursday night, San Jacinto Junior High in Midland hosted a celebration of Black History.

The event featured guest speakers, artwork and live music from the school's choir and the Midland High Soul Steppers.

The best part, students were the ones that put on the entire celebration.

"I say completely it's about 90% student led," San Jacinto Art Teacher Candice Hicks said. "We have a 7th grade student that's even running lights. We have two speakers that are a 7th and 8th grader. We're trying to put this into their hands. So this show is not for them it's actually something that they can really feel a part of. And are AVID students, we have about 20 AVID students, [AVID] is a college prep program, they're ushering people in, taking photographs [and] greeting people at the door."
