City of Alpine declares state of disaster after massive fire

Due to the massive fire from May 26, Mayor Catherine Eaves has determined that extraordinary measures must be taken.
The fire was contained Sunday evening, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

ALPINE, Texas — The City of Alpine has issued a local state of emergency following the massive fire on May 26 that devastated the downtown area, including at least one historic building and multiple local businesses.

According to a release from the city, downtown Alpine and the businesses and buildings impacted by and lost in the fire were all a central part of the city. The city has also suffered widespread or severe damage, injury or total loss of life or property.

Mayor Catherine Eaves has determined that extraordinary measures have to be taken to alleviate the suffering of people and to rehabilitate property.

Therefore, a local state of emergency and disaster has been declared for the City of Alpine.

The state of disaster took effect Tuesday and will continue for no more than seven days unless continued or renewed by city council.

This declaration activates the Alpine Emergency Management Plans and authorizes the furnishing of aid and assistance.
