MIDLAND, Texas — The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded the City of Midland millions of dollars in grant funding from the FY24 Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant (SS4A), the city announced on Friday.

In a report released this week, USDOT awarded a $8.6 million grant to the city.

According to the city, the money will go towards the implementation of a project outlined in the City's Vision Zero Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP).

The city stated that the grant money will help make improvements along the Lamesa Road corridor and citywide signal retiming.

"Proposed safety improvements are estimated to reduce total crashes by 618 over a 20-year period on Lamesa Road, between Business 20 and Gist Avenue (41% of bicycle and pedestrian crashes citywide have occurred along this corridor)," the city said in a press release.

With the USDOT grant money, the city said signal timing will be updated on all intersections within city limits to create a complete system. The system will help promote citywide safety and efficiency.

Below is how the CSAP fits in with the City of Midland Strategic Plan:

  • Setting the standard for a safe and secure city
  • Improving the quality of life and place
  • Providing sound governance and fiscal management
