MIDLAND, Texas — A major retailer is now officially coming to the Tall City.
On Tuesday morning, Midland City Council voted unanimously for final approval on a deal that is bringing Costco to Midland.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong signed the contracts after approval.
“This is the item I’m asked most consistently about out and about in the community – ‘when are we getting a Costco?’" Mayor Blong said.
That question has now been answered, which is sure to make many Midlanders happy.
“We already have over 6,500 households in the City of Midland that already have Costco memberships," Mayor Blong said. "That is a staggering number when you consider the closest Costco is two hours away.”
While these efforts have gone on for years, Mayor Blong says conversations to make this a reality in 2024 took place over the last six months.
The city will be providing tax rebates for Costco, while the Midland Development Corporation will pay Costco as the company reaches performance measures.
“What we’ve put together here is an incentive package that brings them to our community and allows us to partner with them in the risk that they’re taking," Mayor Blong said. "We believe that the long-term prospect of business in Midland is strong, and that the support for Costco is strong.”
The Midland Costco aims to bring in customers from around West Texas, and it will be quite unique in the Lone Star State.
“They’ll also be building the largest Costco in Texas we were informed today -- 174,000 square feet for that facility on the west side of Midland," Mayor Blong said.
Costco hopes to open in west Midland by the Fall of 2025.
The city expects the store’s presence will help to continue development on that side of town.
“We see that a Costco comes into an area and then rapidly there is quality development around the Costco," Mayor Blong said. "We recognize that this expansion on the 191 corridor draws future commercial development in that corridor that we really want and need for the west side of Midland.”
