DPS releases name, photo of state trooper involved in major SH 302 crash

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety has released the name and photo of the DPS state trooper involved in a major crash along State Highway 302 near Notrees on Tuesday morning.

Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez is a U.S. Army veteran and recent graduate of DPS class A-23.

According to DPS, Vazquez was outside of a patrol vehicle working a crash scene with Ector County Sheriff Deputy Justin Toombs when he was hit by a Cadillac.

Deputy Toombs, Vazquez and the driver of the Cadillac were taken to Medical Center Hospital for treatment.

Vazquez was then airlifted to a Lubbock-area hospital where he remains in critical condition, according to DPS.

A Facebook post on Wednesday from Patrick Clay's Tavern stated that Deputy Toombs is now out of the hospital and recovering at home.

The Cadillac driver's condition is unknown at this time.
