How the Family Resiliency Center's mission has changed over the years

The FRC spoke with NewsWest 9 about what's changed since their opening in 2020.

ODESSA, Texas —

When the Family Resiliency Center (FRC) of the Permian Basin was originally opened back in 2020 it was in response to the August 31, 2019 shooting. Its focus was to help those affected both directly and indirectly.

“When we initially opened, our entire purpose was to respond to the shooting, and so we provided services in person and telehealth after COVID and it was traditional therapy it was...nontraditional therapy, so we offered yoga, art workshops, music therapy. We had dance therapy for a little while and just general assistance and whatever that looked like,” said Chandra Wiginton, the FRC director.

The center is still helping people currently, just in a different way for the most part.

“Although we are still a source of support for people who were affected by the shooting that is not our primary focus anymore. And so, July 1st we began to offer multi systemic therapy. There is family resiliency and keeping kids who are at risk of placement outside of the home," Wiginton said. "The idea behind it, the mission of PermiaCare is to help people live their best lives; that remains the same. It just has a little bit of a different face.”

However, Wiginton said the FRC will always help those still affected by the 2019 Mobile Mass Shooting.

“Even if the face of our programs change, we will be a long-term resource for these communities, and that commitment has not changed,” said Wiginton.

If anyone feels the need for FRC's services, call their office at 432-848-6944. Or, if anyone needs immediate assistance, call PermiaCare's 24/7 crisis hotline at 844-420-3964.
