Man charged with intoxicated manslaughter after Howard County crash

The preliminary investigation indicated that the Jeep was parked on the shoulder of the northbound roadway and then was rear-ended by the Ram 3500.

HOWARD COUNTY, Texas — Forty-one-year-old Jason Earnest Key has been charged with intoxicated manslaughter after a crash in Howard County on Thursday night left one man dead, according to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

On July 25, at 9:22 PM, a collision occurred on US 87 near Mile Marker 374 in Howard County. The release further stated that the incident involved a 2015 Ram 3500 and a 2018 Jeep. 

The preliminary investigation indicated that the Jeep, driven by Jose Gonzales, 64, of Ackerley, TX., was parked on the shoulder of the northbound roadway and then was rear-ended by the Ram 3500, driven by Earnest Key.

Earnest Key was not injured in the crash. Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene.

Earnest Key is currently in custody at the Howard County Jail for the intoxicated manslaughter charge. 

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash. No further information was provided.
