First Annual Children's Health Fair held at Bush Family Home

A new annual event comes to the historic site.

MIDLAND, Texas —

The Bush Family Home held their Children’s Health Fair on Sunday, an event that’s meant to not just help parents talk about health with their children, but also meant to honor a particular Bush Family member.

“This is in honor of Robin Bush, who died of leukemia while the Bush Family lived here at the home. So, we wanted to provide the health information for parents, things that probably Barbara Bush would have loved to hear," said Troy Gray, site manager at the Bush Family Home. "But this is also a fun way for kids to learn about health. As we have a teddy bear booth, so they could bring their teddy bears and learn about health in that manner as well.”

Gray said the hope is that a more child friendly atmosphere allows kids to be more open to having discussions about their health.

“Well, because we also want them for one not to be scared of doctor's offices. They see all this scary equipment, but we want them to know that there's a safe place to go and that and also for them to realize that, you know, that there was a girl here that was very sick and that she needed help," Gray said. "So, children also need to learn when to ask for help when they need it.”

The plan is to make the Children’s Health Fair an annual event at the Bush Family Home, and Gray said they plan on expanding the event over time.

“We also hope to include things like for proactive health, things like health gems and martial arts like Taekwondo and that to come out as well because not only do you want to fix health problems when they occur, but also try to make sure that they don't occur by having good health,” said Gray.
