Corrales passed away on Tuesday at the age of 45.

“Individuals, businesses, municipalities, counties and other political subdivisions and entities in the surrounding area may fly flags at half-staff for the same period of time as a sign of honor and respect,” Gov. Mayor Lori Blong made the request to Abbott “in recognition of Councilman Corrales’ significant impact and out of respect for his years of service.” The gesture will serve as a symbol of the collective mourning and appreciation for his service to the community.

“It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the sudden passing of Dan Corrales,” Blong wrote in the letter to the governor. “He served our community with unwavering dedication, commitment and a passion for public service. High contributions to Midland, Texas, have left an indelible mark on our local government, and he will deeply be missed by his colleagues, constituents and friends alike."

Flags will return to full staff on Friday, Feb. 9, according to Abbott.
