Howard County issues burn ban in place

The Howard County Volunteer Fire Department reported to commissioners about the increase of fires they've seen locally. This led to the burn ban recommendation.

BIG SPRING, Texas — With summer upon West Texas, Howard County is issuing a burn ban in place.

The Howard County Volunteer Fire Department reported to county commissioners about the increase of fires they've seen. Due to this, they decided to make a recommendation to issue the outdoor burn ban for 90 days.

"Are things dry in Howard County? Yes," Randy Johnson, Howard County Judge said. "There's moisture from yesterday. There are places that got good rain; we didn't get it, so we want to be really careful. If we should get good rain, we could rescind and shorten that; we want to be careful."

The Fourth of July was also brough up during discussion. Commissioners have not reached a point to have rules for fireworks yet. They do ask the community to be extra careful if you're lighting anything that could spark a flame.
