MIDLAND, Texas — It’s officially April, which means we’re right in the middle of the spring-cleaning season, and Keep Midland Beautiful knows how important it is to keep Midland beautiful.
That’s why they’re participating in an event that gives people an extra incentive to greatly clean up their surroundings.
It’s called the Great American Cleanup.
"It begins in the beginning of March [March 1st] and it goes all the way through May 31," Keep Midland Beautiful Executive Director Joy Paulson said. "And what it is, is we have organizations, companies, families, groups come in, we provide them with all the cleaning supplies and send them out to the location of where they're going to do their cleanup, or they can choose their own location and we give them gift cards to Chick-Fil-A."
It's an event that's been around for decades.
Even though we’re only a month in, this year has already seen plenty of people wanting to make a difference in what their community looks like.
And that’s only going to be the beginning of this spring cleaning.
"We've had 30 groups go out," said Paulson. "We have close to 1500 individuals going to help clean up. "
They say April Showers bring May flowers.
"[April] That's where most of our groups really go out," said Paulson.
So, it’s important to make sure that the ground that those flowers are growing on are clean.
Nonprofits have an opportunity to help both their mission and their community.
"The Trash 4 Cash is a city funded program," said Paulson. "And it's exclusively for nonprofits that are 501(c)(3). And what it is, is an opportunity for them to come out to clean, each person gets paid $10 an hour. They can earn up to $600 per cleanup, $3,600 for the year and it's a wonderful opportunity for 501s to earn a little cash for their nonprofit."
So, it's important to do your part to make the community we call home, litter free.
