Law firm files wrongful death suit after fatal test-drive crash in Odessa

The suit named Benjamin Meece, who was test-driving a 2021 Dodge Challenger with car salesman Kenneth Salas.

ODESSA, Texas — A wrongful death suit has been filed by Zehl & Associates on behalf of three siblings following the June 7 accident in Odessa that killed their mother, Quma Martinez Carrillo, 47.

The suit named Benjamin Meece, 37, who was test-driving a 2021 Dodge Challenger, with car salesman Kenneth Salas, who was working at All American Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Odessa, also listed as a defendant.

According to the filing, Meece was driving eastbound on East University Drive when the Challenger collided with Carrillo’s Honda Accord at the intersection of Oakwood Drive, ejecting her from the vehicle. Surveillance and black box data showed the Challenger reached speeds up to 124 mph.

“Benjamin Meece had no business being allowed behind the wheel in the first place. On top of that, his recklessness and negligence were enabled by a man trying to make a sale,” said Ryan Zehl, founding partner of Zehl & Associates. Further adding, “Nothing will bring Quma back to her family, but we want to make sure that Mr. Meece, Mr. Salas and the dealership are held accountable.”

The document stated that Meece attempted to flee on foot but was arrested and charged with four felony charges that included manslaughter and aggravated assault. The document also stated that Meece has a history of arrests, including charges of criminal trespass, child endangerment, vehicle theft, breaking and entering, theft, and forgery.

The plaintiffs, Natasha Hitchcock, Alexis Urias, and Carrillo’s son, identified as G.C., are seeking damages for court costs, funeral expenses, loss of income, companionship, and mental anguish.
