MIDLAND, Texas — The Legacy High School mariachi band has made it to state after a perfect score at last weekend's UIL Mariachi Festival in El Paso. They did all this in only their first year.
"Mariachi Revolución", the group's name, earned the best possible score of "1" from every judge.
The mariachi program started in 2021, but new Director Zach Machuca just started the varsity performance group last fall. At that time there were only six students in the calls. Now, 19 musicians participated in the performance.
"I am immensely proud of the dedication and talent displayed by our students," Machuca said in a press release. "Achieving a perfect score in our first year of competition is a testament to their commitment and enthusiasm."
The Regional Mariachi competition had 27 schools across West Texas. Mariachi Revolución will advance to the State Festival in Seguin, TX., which is scheduled for Feb. 23-25 where the group will take on the best high school mariachi bands from across the state.
