New details into the arrest of the man found dead in an Ector County jail cell

50-year-old Joe Daniel Miranda was found unresponsive in a cell Sunday morning, ECSO tells NewsWest 9. He was then taken to MCH where he was pronounced dead.

ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — NewsWest 9 has obtained an arrest affidavit detailing 50-year-old Joe Daniel Miranda's arrest on Saturday morning. Miranda was reportedly found dead in an Ector County jail cell on Sunday morning.

According to the affidavit, at about 5:37 a.m. Saturday, Odessa Police Department was dispatched to the 800 block of West 25th Street in reference to a burglary in process.

The caller said that the man, later identified as Miranda, was in his living room and would eventually try to enter multiple bedrooms.

The caller called 911 while attempting to hold his bedroom door shut, but according to the affidavit, Miranda kept pushing on the bedroom door trying to get in. The caller said that once Miranda heard sirens, he ran out of the house, running northbound.

Upon arrival, an OPD drone saw Miranda in a nearby backyard. OPD then entered the backyard and arrested him.

Law enforcement says Miranda, reportedly shirtless and barefoot, was "sweating profusely" and making nonsensical statements to officers.

OPD says Miranda was also erratic. Based on their training and experience, OPD says he was under the influence of narcotics.

Miranda reportedly refused to identify himself, instead swearing at officers, according to the affidavit. He then refused to enter the patrol unit and would have to be forced into the vehicle.

Miranda was arrested for criminal trespassing, resisting arrest, public intoxication and failure to identify.

The next morning, ECSO says that Miranda was found unresponsive in a cell. Jail personnel then started administering CPR until an ambulance arrived.

Miranda was taken to Medical Center Hospital ER where he was pronounced dead.

Miranda's cause of death has not been given.

Per protocol, the Texas Rangers are now investigating this death.

NewsWest 9 has reached out to the Texas Rangers and will continue to update this article as we learn more.

ECSO Sheriff Mike Griffis says Miranda was the first person to die in the Ector County jail this year and that one person died last year in the jail.
