MIDLAND, Texas — The Midland Chamber of Commerce announced recipients of its community awards, which will be presented at its annual luncheon slated for Sept. 25.

The event, sponsored by Priority Power and co-hosted by the Midland Development Corporation, will take place at the Bush Convention Center.

According to a Monday afternoon news release, its members and the public nominated "outstanding individuals and businesses for the prestigious awards."

Alayne Paulson, the chamber's vice president of chamber relations, said through the release, "a panel consisting of the chamber’s board of directors and former chairpersons reviewed and judged the nominations."

This year's honorees are:

Wynn Award: Bobby Burns

The Wynn Award will be presented to former Midland Mayor and retired Chamber President & CEO Robert E. “Bobby” Burns. This award recognizes individuals whose sustained leadership and contributions in economic and community development have significantly impacted Midland. Burns’ achievements include key roles in the development of the Midland International Air and Space Port, Loop 250, and the Scharbauer Sports Complex.

Citizen of the Year: Dr. Stephanie Howard

The inaugural Citizen of the Year Award will go to Stephanie Howard, who has served as the superintendent of the Midland Independent School District since January 2023. This award celebrates individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the community through leadership, volunteerism, and advocacy within the past year. Under Howard’s leadership, MISD has made significant progress, most notably her guiding of the long-term planning efforts that laid the groundwork for the $1.4B school bond passed by Midland voters in November.

Heart of Midland Award – Small Business: Henry Resources LLC

Founded in 1969 by Paula and the late Jim Henry, Henry Resources LLC is an industry leader and a philanthropic cornerstone in Midland. Though the company has evolved over the years, its commitment to community support remains steadfast. The inaugural Heart of Midland Award – Small Business recognizes businesses with 50 or fewer employees that integrate community service into their core operations.

Heart of Midland Award – Large Business: Diamondback Energy

Based in Midland, Diamondback Energy has emerged as a leader in the oil and gas industry over the past two decades. In addition to its operational success, Diamondback is known for its commitment to improving the quality of life in Midland and surrounding communities. The inaugural Heart of Midland Award – Large Business honors businesses with 51 or more employees that exemplify outstanding community support. The Midland Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1924, is nearing the end of its centennial celebration.

"In addition to recognizing these distinguished award recipients, the 2024 Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon will offer an opportunity to introduce and install the Chamber's new board of directors, reflect on the past year’s accomplishments, and provide a preview of what’s ahead," the news release said.

Table sponsorships and tickets are available for purchase until September 19.
