MIDLAND, Texas — The Midland City Council will be voting on Feb. 13 to call for a special election on May 4 to fill the late Dan Corrales' seat on Midland City Council.
According to the City of Midland, state law requires a governing body to hold a special election within 120 days of an open vacancy. City Councilman At-Large Dan Corrales passed away on Jan. 30.
After the vote on Tuesday, a notice of election will be posted to the City of Midland website once Mayor Lori Blong signs it.
Eligible Midlanders will then be able to file for the seat. The filing period is expected to be from Feb. 13 to March 4. An at-large seat requires a candidate run city-wide.
The winner of the election will serve the rest of the term, which ends in Jan. 2025.
If they want to serve another term, they will have to run for office again in November.
If the council approves the May 4th date for the special election, "it would join other elections set for the uniform election date – those having to do with the Midland Central Appraisal District and a utility district inside Midland County," according to the Midland County Elections Office on Wednesday.
The last time a Midland special election happened was in Jan. 2020 when John Love III resigned to run for US Senate. John Norman won a three-person race to replace Love and represent District 2.
In July 2008, Jerry Morales won a special election for an at-large city council seat. The seat was vacated when Wes Perry was elected Mayor in Nov. 2007.
