MIDLAND, Texas — Editor's Note: This is a direct news release sent to NewsWest 9 from Midland College.

Midland College will host a First-Generation, First-to-College Resource Fair, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, on Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Carrasco Room. This event is designed to empower first-generation college students by providing valuable resources, networking opportunities, and insights from those who have navigated the challenges of higher education.

Attendees will have the chance to participate in mini-group sessions led by first-generation students and professionals, sharing their personal journeys and strategies for success. The fair will also include opportunities to learn more about Midland College's offerings, engage with the Midland community, and enjoy complimentary breakfast and lunch.

“This Resource Fair is a testament to Midland College’s commitment to first-generation students," said Dr. Terry Gilmour, MC Government Professor and Director of the MC Honors Program. “We believe in empowering our students to embrace their unique journeys and achieve their academic dreams.”

This event falls on the heels of Midland College announcing its recent selection as a member of the 2024-2025 cohort of the FirstGen Forward Network, a prestigious national initiative that recognizes institutions dedicated to enhancing the experiences and success of first-generation college students. This designation underscores Midland College's ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

Midland College also recently announced the newest class of First-Generation Ambassadors, a program that empowers passionate student leaders to represent Midland College by engaging in outreach and community events. In addition to personal and professional development, the First-Gen Ambassador Program includes scholarship opportunities tied to participation, further incentivizing student engagement and commitment.

All first-generation students, families, and community members are invited to join MC for this enriching event. Together, we can celebrate successes, share knowledge, and help the next generations reimagine their futures.
