A look behind the curtain at auditions for community stage productions

Midland Community Theatre talks about what it's like working with the community on auditions and why experience isn't everything.

MIDLAND, Texas —

The Midland Community Theatre is currently doing auditions for their upcoming production of Driving Miss Daisy.

Usually when people hear about auditions going on for a play in their community, they probably imagine needing to have all kinds of experience being on stage.

However, according to the MCT, that just isn’t the case and they welcome all levels of experience.

“You know, if you have an inclination of any kind to come and be on stage and give acting a try, then I'm going to say come,” said Carl Moore, guest director of MCT's Driving Miss Daisy production.

While having experience is a good thing, Moore said the drive and passion to act needs to be in the person.

“A professional production, you're dealing with actors who have been schooled, trained and all of that," Moore said. "But the thing that they have, that our local community theaters have, is someone who's got a heart for it and also, is willing to put in the time. Professional actors are willing to do that, and amateur actors are willing to do that too.”

It’s not just the director who’s responsible for casting, but rather him and a committee who watch the auditions to determine who is best for what parts in a show.

Moore said even if someone doesn’t get casted, they have still gained valuable experience and more confidence in themselves that they can then use for another audition.

“My career was as a high school theater teacher, so I like working with people who have no experience," Moore said. "I like being the one who pulls that out of them and it's really great fun for me. It's exciting for me, and actually it's also exciting for our audiences when they show up and they see somebody who they've never seen before and they are very impressed with the work that they're doing.”

Auditions for Driving Miss Daisy will be held again at the Midland Community Theatre Monday night at 6:30 p.m.
