MIDLAND, Texas — Firefighters were trying to move a hot oiler truck that caught fire out of the way when they managed a narrow escape.
Midland Fire Chief Blumenauer said a hose from the oiler truck disconnected, dropping fluid on the ground.
"They're feeling a little like they've let me down and they haven't… I don't know how many guys had said that, it's in the situation that they're all unique and different and this is a unique one. No one would have ever expected that hose to break and send fluid across the ground. That's not something we expected to happen," Blumenauer said.
That fluid caught fire and rolled under station 3's fire truck. It didn't take long for the truck to be completely on fire.
The fire fighters were able to get away in just the nick of time. Their training is what prepared them for this type of unique situation.
"The guys that did show up, they knew exactly what to do because they've been well trained across all disciplines including hazmat. They knew how to handle the situation and they did an awesome job of stopping it as fast as they did," Chief Blumenauer said.
Fire Chief Blumenauer said they will start making arrangements for the replacing of the fire truck that was lost today.
