Midland man dead after MPD responds to shots fired at Grand Texan Hotel

Upon arrival, officers found the windows of a room shot out, according to MPD.

MIDLAND, Texas — At around 7:40 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, Midland Police responded to reports of gunfire at the Grand Texan Hotel and Convention Center, located at 4300 W. Wall St., according to a press release from the City of Midland.

The release further stated that upon arrival, officers found the windows of a room shot out, according to MPD.

“The officers heard one gunshot while outside the room,” MPD reported. Further adding, “Officers maintained cover of the room while additional officers evacuated multiple people from the surrounding rooms. Officers made multiple attempts to contact the person in the room; however, no contact was made.”

MPD SWAT operators arrived and breached the door, using a drone and robot to enter the room, where they found a man on the ground. Upon entering, SWAT confirmed the man was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had fired multiple rounds from a pistol and a rifle inside the room, with some shots exiting the room,” MPD reported.

The victim's next of kin has been notified. The investigation is ongoing, with no further information provided at this time.
