MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - You give what you need or take what you need. That's the idea behind a blessing box.
One Midland woman put one outside her home in a way to help someone else during the holidays.
Anel Espinoza lives on a busy street on Illinois Avenue.Which is why outside her home, you'll find a box. But it takes a second look to see what's inside that she hopes will bless somebody this holiday season.
"That's what gave me the push to just do it," said Espinoza. "It's for those who are hungry, or who are short on money and need something to eat."
The blessing box holds non-perishable items for anyone who needs it. But the message behind it is what's the most non-perishable of all.
"My parents have always been big on that, to give when you can so I want to teach my children that," said Espinoza. "So my kids can see what life is all about. Pay it forward and be kind."
Espinoza made the blessing box two weeks ago and it's only getting started, with a box of food already donated, she hopes it will expand even more.
In a season of giving, there's hope that behind the doors, there's a lesson learned through a gesture of kindness.
"I hope it encourages people to give. Not necessarily a blessing box but in other ways, it's just the act of giving," said Espinoza.
Espinoza is also collecting jackets to add to a similar project called a Jacket Jackpot, where someone can pick up a free jacket to stay warm.
The blessing box is located at 3118 W. Illinois Ave. in Midland.
