Multi-vehicle fiery crash kills 1, injures another in Reeves County

A Pecos man has died after a collision on US 285 near mile marker 342.

REEVES COUNTY, Texas — A multi-vehicle accident has taken the life of one and injured another person on Saturday morning, Oct. 12, according to Sergeant Steven Blanco with the Texas Department of Public Safety.   

The crash involved a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2024 International truck.  

According to a news release, Benjamin Raul Hernandez, 41, out of Midland, driving a 2024 International truck, was going southbound on US 285 near mile marker 342.

Fifty-six-year-old Mahmoud M. Abbad out of Pecos was traveling northbound in his Chevrolet Equinox on US 285.

According to Blanco, Hernandez "veered off the roadway then returned onto the road," spinning out and striking the Equinox driven by Abbad, which caught on fire.

Abbad was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hernandez was injured and treated at Reeves Regional Hospital for minor injuries. 

This crash remains under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
