New Mexico police conduct operations to reduce crashes in Lea County

Beginning on Feb. 8 continuing through June 4, 19 separate operations have netted 992 traffic stops resulting in 1,071 citations and 16 arrests.

LEA COUNTY, N.M. — In February, New Mexico State Police officers in Lea County conducted operations to educate drivers by enforcing traffic and commercial motor vehicle codes with the goal of reducing crashes.

According to a press release from NM DPS, the operation focused on some of Lea County's busiest roads: State Roads 128 and 18, US Highway 62/180, Delaware Basin, Weaver and Battle Axe Roads. Officers patrolled these areas during peak traffic hours.

Beginning on Feb. 8 continuing through June 4, 19 separate operations have netted 992 traffic stops resulting in 1,071 citations and 16 arrests. Overall, crashes have been down by over 30% this quarter.

New Mexico State Police will continue to do these operations throughout the year.
