Odessa City Hall gathers community for Food Truck Friday

To help celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the City of Odessa invited several local food trucks.

ODESSA, Texas — The City of Odessa held their "Food Truck Friday" event today at City Hall. At the event they brought several food trucks in from the local community to come in and help celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Food Truck Friday is meant to do more than just help celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

It also promotes local small businesses by bringing together multiple food trucks from the community and showcases the bonds that these food truck businesses feel with their community.

Two owners of a food truck named Home Brew Coffee Company talked about what it meant to them to be able to participate in an event like this. They also talked about how they came to be in the food truck industry.

“We love to participate in all events, Amanda Maldonado, co-owner of the Home Brew Coffee Co. food truck, said. "We get a lot of calls from the City of Odessa. So we love to be apart of the community.”

For the Maldonados, the idea to get into the business didn’t actually come from either of them, but it came from their son.

“This was never anything that we really imagined that we imagined we’d be doing at this moment," Maldonado continued. "But my son, John Maldonado, he actually had this dream of opening this coffee shop.”

After getting the idea their food truck business, Home Brew Coffee Company, started off with small steps.

“I just kind of jumped at it," said Fabian Maldonado, co-owner of the food truck. "I just built my own trailer and did it on the weekends and as it got closer, I was like, ‘what am I doing?’ but i got this far, let’s make it happen.”

Though it was a slow start, it’s been working out for them and they hope to one day open their own brick and mortar location that they can someday pass onto their son.

“So, we knew we had to start small just to get our name out there and just to see if people liked us, and we’ve taken off from there.” Amanda continued.

Other food trucks that were present at the event included El Colega, Papaya Mexican Tacos, Hercules Barbecue and 2 Cajun Cooks.

If you didn't get a chance to attend you can find all these food trucks by keeping an eye out around town or by looking up their social media.
