Odessa police turn a case over to the Texas Rangers after a woman dies while in police custody following a crash

A woman in Odessa was under the influence when she crashed her car Thursday night. Later, she died at MCH.

ODESSA, Texas — A woman in Odessa died at Medical Center Hospital Thursday night after she crashed her car while under the influence. Police are viewing this incident as an in-custody death, meaning she was in the custody of law enforcement when she died.

The Odessa Police Department said they went to the scene of a crash involving an intoxicated person Thursday night in the 2700 block of Eisenhower Rd.

According to an investigation, the woman involved in the crash was under the influence and placed under arrest.

After she was detained, the woman needed medical attention before being taken to jail.

She was then transported to Medical Center Hospital. While at MCH, she experienced medical difficulties, became unresponsive and ended up passing away.

OPD say they are viewing this case as an in-custody death and the investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers.
