One dead after collision at US 87 and County Road L in Dawson County

The collision involved a 2023 Toyota Camry that was traveling east on County Road L and a 2019 GMC Acadia that was heading south on US 87.

DAWSON COUNTY, Texas — On May 2 at 3:04 p.m., in Dawson County, at the intersection of US 87 and County Road L, a collision occurred involving a 2023 Toyota Camry that was traveling east on County Road L and a 2019 GMC Acadia that was heading south on US 87, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety press release. 

The press release stated that the driver of the Toyota Camry, 37-year-old John Villalobos, failed to yield at a stop sign-marked intersection, resulting in a collision with 89-year-old Rex Zant. 

Zant was pronounced dead by medical staff at Medical Arts Hospital in Lamesa. 

Villalobos was transported to UMC Hospital in Lubbock. 

The crash remains under investigation.
