One person dies, another injured in North Midland ATV accident

An ATV accident on Tuesday night has left a woman identified as 42-year-old Emelda Moreno in North Midland dead.

MIDLAND, Texas — One woman has died after a crash involving a Polaris 1000 ATV four-wheeler just south of the 6600 block of Shawnee, according to Stewart Doreen with the City of Midland.

At 11:47 p.m. on Tuesday, the Midland Police Department and Midland Fire Department were called about an ATV accident that killed a Weatherford woman.

Once officials arrived to the scene and conducted an investigation, it revealed that the driver and rear passenger were traveling westbound and the road was separated by a beam and went to the right.

Doreen said the driver was "traveling at an unsafe speed" and was unable to make the turn, ultimately hitting the beam and losing control.

According to Doreen, "neither occupant was wearing a helmet."

The driver, 31-year-old Sameul Richard Merril, was taken to a nearby hospital to treat his injuries.

The passenger, 42-year-old Emelda Moreno, was found 100 feet west of the spot of the impact point. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Doreen, "No arrests took place and the investigation is ongoing."
