Over 3,000 crashes happened in Midland in 2023, City of Midland reports

The City of Midland's Traffic Operations Division released its 2023 Traffic Crash Report on Tuesday, which provided data on traffic crashes within city limits.

MIDLAND, Texas — A 2023 Traffic Crash Report for Midland was released Tuesday, containing data of reported traffic crashes on public roadways within the City of Midland's limits. The City of Midland's Traffic Operations Division (TOD) was the agency who did the report.

According to the city, there were a number of crashes that may have occurred in 2023 that went unreported because of the change in the response policy of the Midland Police Department. The city says that due to COVID-19, MPD was restricted to the types of crashes officers were able to respond to.

Below are the trends that the City of Midland's TOD saw in 2023:

  • The total number of reported crashes in the City of Midland slightly increased -- with 2,919 in 2022 to 3,016 in 2023.
  • The number of crashes with injuries, which are always responded to and reported by police, increase by 9% from 874 in 2022 to 959 in 2023.
  • The number of fatalities in 2023 was 20, resulting from 18 fatal crashes compared to 2022 was 24 fatalities, resulting from 23 fatal crashes.
  • Overall, traffic volume counts taken throughout the city in 2023 increased 15 percent compared to 2022 counts at the same locations.
  • The location with the highest number of reported crashes in 2023 is the interchange of Loop 250 at Andrews Highway, as in prior years.
  • Seven of the Top 10 high crash locations in Midland are interchanges on either Loop 250 or Interstate. As expected, the high crash locations identified each year generally represent the highest volume intersections within the city limits.
