Texas Commission on Environmental Quality continues clean up in Odessa after Permian Basin Containers fire

State Representative Brooks Landgraf says TCEQ continues to clean up the PBC site after the July fire, and subsequent flare ups, caused major damage in the area.

ODESSA, Texas — State Representative Brooks Landgraf provided an update Saturday on the July fire at the Permian Basin Containers site in Odessa.

Landgraf said in a Facebook post that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) "has taken the lead so that the final phase of the clean-up will be completed faster."

Later in the post Landgraf shared the latest report he had received from agency personnel:

According to the post, the Rodriguez water well -- "the only water well in the area known, to date, to be contaminated, has been sealed and capped."

The expectation from the TCEQ is that the site clean-up will be done in its entirety in three weeks.

Landgraf continued in the post, detailing the plans in how the clean-up will commence.

"Clean-up operations for this final phase include surface scraping, excavation of impaired/contaminated soil, organization/preparation of remaining storage totes for final disposal, removal and recycling of damaged plastic storage totes, removal and recycling of scrap/damaged metal and testing, removal, and disposal of on-site sludge," Landgraf wrote.

According to Landgraf, once these tasks are complete, "the on-site concrete slabs will be pressure washed. Berms will be maintained throughout the process to prevent additional runoff into the adjacent neighborhood."

Landgraf also said "the nearby frac pits have been emptied."

TCEQ's work will not be done quite yet, as they then will need to move into "supervising a full remediation phase." The details of this phase have not yet been released.

Landgraf went on to say "please let me know if you have any questions."
