Texas Rangers close case on Pecos Police officers suspected of being involved in fatal shooting

Pecos Chief of Police Lisa Tarango said the Pecos Police officers suspected of being involved in the shooting death of 37-year-old Adam Ybarra are back on duty.

PECOS, Texas — Pecos Police Department Chief of Police Lisa Tarango tells NewsWest 9 that the Pecos Police officers who were suspected to be involved in the shooting death of 37-year-old Adam Ybarra are not going to be indicted.

On November 26, 2023, Pecos PD officers were called to a home in Pecos because of a domestic violence issue.

When officers arrived, they made contact with Ybarra and an unknown sequence of events unfolded and then a shooting involving officers occurred.

Ybarra died as a result of the shooting.

After the incident, Chief Tarango said the officers involved in the shooting were put on restrictive duty and an investigation was turned over to the Texas Rangers.

As of Wednesday, Feb. 14, the officers will not be indicted and they have gone back to work.

Chief Tarango released a statement on the Texas Rangers' decision:

"I was made aware of the Reeves County Grand Jury decision by the Texas Rangers and [was] informed that their case was being closed. The Texas Rangers were called, and the Pecos Police Department worked through the investigative process as the Texas Rangers completed their investigation. We realize the investigation is a lengthy, thorough and complete process and is done so with complete cooperation from our agency with the Texas Rangers. The ability to have an outside agency be responsible for this type of investigation allows law enforcement agencies the ability in knowing the process is done thoroughly and efficiently. The officers involved in the investigation have been returned to active duty with the Pecos Police Department. " - Lisa Tarango, Chief of Police, Pecos Police Department
