EDDY COUNTY, N.M. — One person is dead following a single vehicle crash early Wednesday morning in Eddy County, New Mexico.
According to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, the traffic unit responded to the fatal crash on Hildalgo Rural Road at 2:15 a.m.
The investigation determined that the vehicle driven by 18-year-old Jiovanni Melendrez, was traveling southbound towards Dark Canyon Road. Melendrez lost control of the vehicle after "driving off the roadway onto the northbound shoulder," causing the vehicle to flip.
During the crash Melendrez was ejected from the vehicle, then pronounced dead at the scene.
Further investigation determined alcohol and speed were factors contributing to the crash according to Case Agency Deputy Chambers.
The crash remains under investigation, no further information is available.
