TxDOT Odessa District reports record low fatality rate in 2023

The Texas Department of Transportation reached a significant milestone in road safety.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reported a record low fatality rate in 2023 with their goal to increase road safety.

According to a TxDOT news release, the fatality rate for the 2023 calendar year is at its lowest of 1.98 per 100 million miles traveled. This is the lowest rate since 2010.

In 2022, the fatality rate was 3.01, which was the highest among all districts. Since 2012, Odessa was ranked in the top five highest fatality rates.

“We continue to address this issue through the four E’s of traffic safety: Engineering, Enforcement, Education, and Engagement,” said Odessa District Engineer Eric Lykins.

“This achievement underscores the strength of partnerships between government agencies, private industry, and non-profits in tackling complex challenges.”

The release additionally stated there is still more work to be done to achieve the ultimate goal of zero fatalities.
