MIDLAND, Texas —
Veterans of Foreign Wars post 4149 and their auxiliary went out Fairview cemetery in Midland today to place American flags at the graves of veterans buried there.
“This weekend is all about the fallen. This weekend is all about those that came before us, and it's all about the reasons why we have what we have today,” said Garrett Spooner, incoming commander for Post 4149.
Though Spooner and his fellow members have long left the service, they still feel that sense of duty to serve the country in other ways by honoring those that made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Well, for us, this is one of the most honorable things we can do. We're honoring these guys that have paid the ultimate price. That's what the weekend, Memorial Day weekend means. Memorial Day weekend is honoring those that have passed, honoring those that have given us what we have today, our freedoms, our liberties and things that we take for granted today,” Spooner continued.
But it wasn’t just the members, their families also came out to help with the flag placements.
Spooner says that it’s important to teach the younger generations about Memorial Day and its significance.
“So, for the parents to bring their children out here, I think it's an absolute, just wonderful thing because, we're teaching them the meaning of Memorial Day and they're learning the histories and traditions of what it is we do, why we do it and those things,” Spooner added.
