MIDLAND - A Midland man and his friend were stabbed by a woman they were allegedly trying to rob. His friend died but he's been charged with his murder and it's all because of a Texas law.

18-year-old Tevionn Coffield was arrested after being released from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

He's charged with murdering his friend, Qualen Blake, 18, even though Coffield did not stab him.

Under Texas Law, you can be charged with murder if someone dies while you are committing a felony.

In this case, Coffield and Blake are accused of trying to rob a woman at her apartment at the Park Glen Apartments last week.

According to the report, Blake had a gun and the two demanded money and drugs from the woman.

She told officers one of the suspects threatened to harm a 4-year-old child sleeping in another room.

The report says fearing for the child's safety, the woman got a knife from the kitchen sink and stabbed both men.

Police say they fled in a car and made up a story that they were attacked by some men.

The woman identified the two men as the robbers.

Blake died from being stabbed in the back.

Coffield was stabbed twice in the chest.

He's now in jail on murder charges.
