Candidates for Midland City Council District 1 share visions for growth, safety ahead of November election

With just three weeks until Election Day, the Midland City Council District 1 candidates expressed different approaches to tackling key issues in Midland.

MIDLAND, Texas — 27 days: that’s how long until what could be one of the most important elections in history. But we’re not just talking about the national level. There are also important races happening in West Texas that need your attention and your vote.

NewsWest 9 spoke with the two candidates running for Midland City Council’s District 1 seat. Both made it clear how much they love and care about Midland, but there are factors that set them apart.

Local government requires motivation, and for both Brian Stubbs and Heather Bredimus, that motivation is love.

"I just love Midland. This place is amazing. It has done so much for me and my family, and I want to give back," Stubbs said. "I think I bring unique skills to the City Council: conservative values, being a church member, father, part of several nonprofits, business owner and engineer. I want to bring all of that to City Council so we can solve problems."

“I was born and raised here in Midland. It’s where I met and married my high school sweetheart, and we knew this was where we wanted to raise our kids," Bredimus said. "After college, we moved back, and I just want to make this the best place for everyone to live, work and raise a family.”

Bredimus has identified three key areas she believes deserve attention: road safety, strategic planning and public safety.

“Two years ago, someone broke into our home. Unfortunately, because the police force is so understaffed, they couldn’t respond in time," Bredimus said. "That’s something we depend on, as well as fixing the firefighter pension. Supporting first responders is extremely important.”

Stubbs, a small business owner, focuses on Midland’s growth and retention.

“We face challenges with growth, making better schools and ensuring our police and fire departments grow too. We need an open-door policy to sit down and think through how to grow the city while preserving Midland’s values,” Stubbs said. “I want to bring conservative and Midland values to the City Council so we can start making those decisions."

Both candidates have enjoyed connecting with residents, knocking on doors and keeping communication open. Now, it’s time for the polls to do the talking.
