Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7 and people in Midland, Ector and Greenwood ISD have some big decisions to make on the big day.
Midland ISD has one big bond proposal totaling $1.4 billion. It will build two new high schools, a new elementary school and provide improvements and upgrades district-wide.
Stan Vanhoozer is the PAC Chair for Pro-Bond group Energize Midland. As a graduate and former principal of Legacy High School, he said these schools are needed.
"The schools are old they were built to educate kids through the end of the 20th century we are way into the 21st century and our schools need to be to match that for our 21st century learners," Vanhoozer said. "Having newer schools that are updated, yes we need to improve academics, but this is a tool for the school district to use to help improve those academics."
However, Board President Rachel Walker with MOVE Midland, a non-profit against the bond, thinks otherwise.
"With the lack of accountability and transparency that so many Midlanders feel like they have at MISD there's just a lack of trust and we think there's a lot of opportunities for MISD to win that trust back," Walker said. "We don't feel like a $1.4 billion bond is the best step forward."
Ector County ISD has three bond proposals for consideration.
Prop A includes a new career and technical education center, a new middle school, new buses, the construction of a new transportation facility and district-wide upgrades.
Prop B focuses specifically on upgrades to Ratliff Stadium.
Prop C would build a new practice facility at Odessa High School and install new turf to the existing indoor practice facility at Permian High School.
“We have an opportunity here to have this bond without changing our tax rate with the school district so it’s a great opportunity whether the bond passes or not, our tax rate gonna stay the same," Odessans for a Bright Future Co-Chair Sara Moore said. "So if we have the chance to do something positive for the school district and catch up on some much needed repairs and maintenance, then this is the perfect opportunity to do that."
There are two bond proposals for Greenwood voters.
Prop A includes two new campuses and improvements to the high school and elementary schools.
Prop B will provide for a new event center, featuring an auditorium and gymnasium.
On Election Day, polls open from 7a.m. to 7p.m.
