ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — Cal Hendrick is the newly elected mayor of Odessa.
This comes after the highly anticipated Nov. 5 election victory over current Mayor Javier Joven.
According to unofficial final results sent to NewsWest 9 by Dolores Dominguez (elections voter registrar for Ector County), Hendrick received 67.4 percent of votes in the mayoral race.
NewsWest 9's Tyler Dupnick talked with Hendrick after the win at Hendrick's watch party, saying messages of gratitude.
"Well first of all I want to say a gigantic thank you to my wife, my kids, my mother, all my friends and family, because listen nothing happens in an election without a lot of support, and everyone gave and gave and gave. Number one Is gratitude thankful for all the friendships I have and all the people that have helped out in this campaign," said Hendrick.
Hendrick continued, "I really want to serve the people of Odessa, I was blessed to grow up in Odessa I have had fantastic teachers, great coaches, great church people that really taught me how to be a man and how to live, I want to give that back into the community I want take the talents that I have in the business world and the legal world and fuse that together to make Odessa the best it's ever been and the best it ever will be."
When asked about the challenges he might face as mayor, Hendrick was transparent on key issues in Odessa.
"You know Odessa has some problems let's face it water remains an issue; we had a water leak just last week we continue to have water leaks," Hendrick said. "We have a water reclamation plant that needs attention. We have city employees that are probably below the pay scale they need to be appreciated we need to show them that we love them, but we got to make sure we stay within our budget. We have some work to do and that is just the beginning there is a lot of work that needs to be done."
