MIDLAND, Texas — Early voting starts up the week of Oct. 23, and Wednesday night, the Midland Reporter Telegram hosted a bond election forum at Midland College.
Pro-bond groups like political action committee Energize Midland were able to present their case against non-profit group Move Midland.
You'll remember that MISD is putting a $1.4 billion bond proposition on this years ballot that would help build two new high schools, a new elementary school and provide improvements and safety upgrades throughout the district.
One member of Energize Midland shared why a forum is not only important to get the word out, but to encourage people to vote.
"It's important, particularly for the people who are undecided," Energize Midland Member Josh Ham said. "I think that's kind of the point of these forums [because] if you got people on the fence, you can get someone [to] ask a moderator questions and hopefully get those folks answers and [push them] over the fence to vote for this bond."
As Energize Midland shares their position for the bond, non-profit Move Midland was able to speak with NewsWest 9 and give insight on their position against it.
"We feel that it is detrimental to the future of our students because we need to focus on improving our educational outcomes," Move Midland Board President Rachel Walker said. "First, we think we can still achieve all of the things that this current proposed bond wants to do, and an order that provides transparency and accountability back to the citizens of Midland, where we have to keep our first priority on improving education."
Another item you can expect to see on this year's ballot will be for a trustee position for District 7.
Former District President Bryan Murray is running up against Midlander Joshua Guinn.
Again, early voting starts next Monday, Oct. 23 and will run until Friday, Nov. 3.
