Eddy County authorities find dead infant during investigation

The Eddy County Sheriff's Office wanted to assure the public that this case does not involve an abduction and no suspects are at large.

EDDY COUNTY, N.M. — Eddy County Chief Deputy Matthew Hutchinson informed NewsWest 9 on Friday of an investigation into a reported missing infant case.

The Eddy County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) and Carlsbad Police Department had a potential lead on this case on Friday, Sept. 6.

When detectives followed the lead, both agencies responded to a location near milepost 48 on Queen Highway.

When both agencies arrived, they found the remains of the infant they were searching for. The office of the medical investigator confirmed that was the infant law enforcement was looking for.

Hutchinson said in a release that this case does not involve an abduction and no suspects are at large.

The investigation is ongoing.
